|
Drug |
GHB (gamma-hydroxybutryate) |
Common Name |
GBH, GBL, Liquid E, Liquid X, Fantasy, Midnight Blue, Serenity, Enliven |
Description |
GHB is a colourless, odourless liquid with a slightly salty taste. It can also come in powder form, which is then dissolved in water and swallowed. GBL is used to make GHB and is often sold by itself. GBL is orally ingested and converts to GHB once ingested. |
Routes of use |
Ingestion. |
Effects Required |
In small doses, GHB can have aphrodisiac effects and promote feelings of euphoria, well-being, relaxation and calmness. Inhibitions are lowered and libido increased. |
Other Effects |
The strength of GHB can vary greatly from bottle to bottle so it may be very difficult to know how much is being taken. If too much is taken, the relaxation gives way to drowsiness and there is the risk of nausea, vomiting, muscle stiffness and confusion. Really high doses can lead to convulsions, coma and respiratory collapse. GHB has been implicated in a number of rape cases. |
Dependence and Tolerance |
Not a lot is known about the effects of long term use of GHB. However, it is possible that tolerance, physical dependence and psychological dependence could result. |
Legality |
GHB is a Class C drug - illegal to have, give away or sell. Possession can get you up to two years in jail. Supplying someone else can get you up to fourteen. |
